Nearly 15 golden retrievers descend upon the residents of the Regal Palms assisted living facility in Largo every couple of months, the most recent visit coming on the fourth of July holiday weekend. That the dogs had small American flags celebrating Independence Day in their mouths was just a bonus. The real treat for the senior citizens who are dealing with the early stages of Alzheimer's or other memory impairments is the excitement of interacting with such loving, sociable pets.

The visits are just a small part of the commitment to improve the quality of life for Regal Palms' residents. Part of the award-winning Palms of Largo senior living campus in the heart of Pinellas County, Regal Palms recently unveiled its newest addition, Pearl Garden, which provides an environment promoting independence and self-satisfaction for residents with cognitive challenges. The hour-long "meet and greet" sessions with the golden retrievers are one of many activities the Pinellas County assisted living facility offers.

"It's really remarkable to see the turnout and the response from our residents," says Tammy Dunlap, Pearl Garden Life Enrichment Coordinator for Regal Palms. "This is by far one of our most popular events. Many of our residents fondly remember family pets and respond with warm enthusiasm."

The visits from the four-legged friends usually coincide with a holiday so the golden retrievers usually bring gifts to the residents of the Pinellas

County assisted living facility.

For example, the dogs bring the residents carnations during their Mother's Day visit, and in October, they'll come in full Halloween costumes. And while it may seem like a big enough challenge to handle so many energetic dogs at once, Dunlap says they seem to understand they need to adapt to their surroundings.

"The dogs are very intuitive and they're on their best behavior as soon as they walk through the door," says Dunlap, who has had two golden retrievers of her own. "Spending time with the dogs is so meaningful that the residents reminisce about it for several days after the visit."
